Great Shelford vs. Romsey Town

Saturday, May 13, 2000
Great Shelford

Great Shelford (147 all out; 40 overs)
lost to
Romsey Town (148/6; 35 overs)
by 4 wickets.

The season began in blazing sunlight at Great Shelford and, after some cursory stretching, we acquited ourselves pretty well.

Great Shelford's innings never got going, primarily due to a tight and fast spell from Andy Ralph, who, despite some early no-balling, took 2/20-odd in his ten overs. Andy Owen led by example, with a couple of run outs to add to his tidy spell, and Daniel Mortlock (1/32) bowled reasonably well on his Romsey debut.

In our innings there was a little bit of on-field tension, which made everyone that extra bit determined to win, most notably the man with the ``worst technique'' one of the opposition had ever seen, Tony Desimone. He batted all through our innings to get 70 or so not out, and must have been the (unofficial) man of the match.

So, having gone up a grade from last season, a pretty comfortable victory first up. A sign of things to come? Sadly not . . .
