In theory these early-season warm-up games give the Romsey league players a chance to get their eye in before the season proper, but that side of things was a bit redundant today, with our eleven including five players who play (with, admittedly, varying regularity) for Remnants and another four who've never played for Romsey before. So presumably the whole exercise was entirely for the benefit of Malcolm Creek and Dave Clark!
Dave (0/14) got to start the game with the ball in his hand, but we were unable to make a breakthrough until Jon Steele (1/19) castled one of the Remnants openers with a fantastic swinging yorker. While were a bit more penetrative after that, with only Russell Woolf (1/19), Richard Rex (1/12) and Claunde Warnick (1/20) all getting any wickets, we were far less economical. That said, it was the fielding wot was to blame in many cases, with a huge number of out-field catches being misjudged and even Andy dropping a fairly straightfoward chance cloesr in.
Our chase began quietly as Richard Rex (15 off 34 balls) and Richie Young (1* off 4 balls before retiring when hit on the thumb) saw off some lively Remnants bowling, after which Jon Steele (49 off 34 balls) started hitting boundaries seemingly at will. But an overly-ambitious second run saw him stranded short of his ground (although the umpire might well have ruled "not out" if Jon hadn't walked), and after that our scoring dried up. Malcolm Creek (18* off 15 balls) landed some big blows towards the end of the innings, so he also (if belatedly) got some match practice, but in the end we didn't get close to the Remnants total.
