Report by Daniel Mortlock:
There was something of a build-up to this match against league leaders Harlton, as both clubs had excellent sides out. Romsey, in particular, was set to field something pretty close to a first eleven (well, at least until Robin had to pull out due to travel commtiments). And even though there was lots of rain on Friday, Saturday was glorious and so . . .
. . . an e-mail arrived at 9am announcing that the game was off because the pitch was too wet. This was as surprising as it was disappointing - with another four hours of baking sun and drying wind before match time it was hard to believe the ground was really unplayable. And, as Faruk discovered on an afternoon walk, there was a league game being played in lovely conditions at Fitz, so why not a kilometre south of there?
That answer, we found out a week later, was that the covers had been left off at Trinity on Friday, which is absurd given that the unequivocal forecast had been for a record-breaking 24 hours of rain. So maybe an even more frustrating (non-)result than it seemed on the day.
